Best upcoming smartphones 2016: The biggest phones set to launch this year
Before you commit to that 24-month phone contract, you should cast your eyes over this list of 2016's best upcoming smartphones. 2016 has brought us a veritable smorgasbord of new Android smartphones – notably the Samsung Galaxy S7, LG G5, Sony Xperia X, Xperia X Professional and the HTC One X9.
How have we come up with this list? Well, here at Alphr, we keep track of when we expect the year’s upcoming smartphones to launch, so we thought we’d share that information so that you can plan your purchase accordingly.
Where possible, the list below contains official release dates, but if we're using guesswork or internet rumours then the date/month will be marked TBC – and we'll be keeping the list up to date with the latest information we can get our hands on.
Upcoming smartphones 2016: Release date
Upcoming smartphones 2016 (in detail):
Sony Xperia X and Xperia X Performance
Release date: TBC
Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead. We were expecting Sony to pull the covers off a gorgeous new supercharged Xperia Z6 at MWC in 2016, but instead it killed off the Xperia Z completely: long live the Xperia X family.
One interesting development is that Sony has decided to replace its flagship with a pair of new phones. The new smartphones look millimetre-identical barring one significant difference: they use different Qualcomm processors. The Xperia X uses a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 whereas the Xperia X Performance opts for the range-topping behemoth, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (click here to check out our benchmarks of Qualcomm's top-end SoC – it's a beast).
Apart from the processors, however, the two phones are identical. You get a 5in Full HD display, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage in the single-SIM model (double in the dual-SIM version), a microSD slot, a 23MP rear camera and a 13MP front-facing camera. Naturally, Android 6 Marshmallow is installed as standard.
OnePlus 3
Release date: September 2016
The key to OnePlus' success is gloriously simple: it delivers premium smartphones for half the price of its rivals. Now it’s set to do it all again with its fourth phone, the OnePlus 3, in 2016.
It’s a safe bet that we’ll be getting a new OnePlus phone this year, though. Carl Pei, the company's co-founder, told CNET that the OnePlus 3 will launch late in Q2 2016, and is expected to land in June.
It looks like it might be pretty special, too. A version of the OnePlus 3 was spied over on both AnTuTu and GFXBench's performance charts. With a Snapdragon 820 processor, 5.5-inch display, 64GB storage and 4GB RAM, not to mention a rumoured price of around £215, the OnePlus 3 may be the affordable flagship we've all been waiting for.
Apple iPhone 7
Release date: September 2016
The iPhone 7 should be more revolution than evolution, and will come with a raft of new features, all packaged in a totally redesigned handset. Apple has kept most of the iPhone 7 details under wraps, but as we approach its release date, we’re slowly uncovering more details about the next iPhone.
The juiciest tidbut so far? That there may be an iPhone 7 Pro – which could mean the Pencil is coming to the iPhone. Samsung's Galaxy Note 6 might have competition.
Galaxy Note 6
Release date: Autumn 2016
It’s not long until the release date of the Samsung’s Galaxy Note 6 is officially announced, and the rumours are rapidly reaching fever pitch. With whispers of Android N, USB Type-C, a whopping 6GB of RAM and a frankly outrageous 256GB of storage, the Note 6 is set to be a beast.
And if that doesn't whet your whippet, then the news of a 5.77in, 2K Super AMOLED display just might. Yummy.
